Shopify Collective lets retailers sell products from other Shopify stores without holding inventory. The supplier ships the order, while the retailer owns the customer relationship. Returns add a wrinkle: the item usually needs to go back to the supplier's warehouse, but the retailer is still responsible for refunding the customer.
This guide covers how Shopify Collective returns work, which settings retailers need, and how to manage the process through ReturnZap. Customers get the same branded returns experience whether they bought your products, a supplier's products, or both.
When a customer returns a Collective item, three things have to happen:
You can choose from three return-processing options in your Shopify Collective returns policy:
The second option gives you the most control. The customer requests the return through your portal, receives your emails, and tracks the return on your site, while the package still goes to the correct supplier.
Yes. Shopify's documentation lists returns apps that are compatible with Collective. To work properly, an app must route each supplier's items to that supplier's address, keep each return to a single destination, and create returns in Shopify so Collective can sync them to the supplier.
ReturnZap supports Shopify Collective returns using this same model:
The setup takes about fifteen minutes for a typical store.
1. Configure your Collective returns policy. In your Shopify Collective retailer settings, set return processing to "Retailer provides return label, and customer returns items to supplier," and set supplier refunds to "Collective takes no action." Match the return window to the one in your ReturnZap policy.
2. Add each supplier as a return location. In ReturnZap under Settings > Shipping, add an alternate location with each supplier's return address.
3. Create a routing rule for each supplier. Set the rule to send products to the supplier's location when the product vendor matches that supplier. Vendor is usually the simplest condition because Collective products carry the supplier's vendor name in your catalog.
4. Restrict exchanges for Collective items. Shopify Collective doesn't support exchanges between stores, so add a rule offering refund or store credit instead of exchanges for supplier products.
Once setup is complete, Collective returns flow through your usual ReturnZap portal. The customer selects the items, ReturnZap generates a label addressed to the supplier, and Shopify syncs the return to the supplier's admin. When the supplier receives and restocks the item, Shopify records the restock against the return on your order. You can issue the refund from ReturnZap or automate it.
Mixed orders are common and don't require any special handling. Your products follow your usual policies and route to your warehouse, while supplier products follow their routing rules. The portal guides the customer through one return per destination. Collective-compatible returns apps handle multi-supplier orders this way because a return label can have only one destination address.
Yes. ReturnZap supports Shopify Collective returns through per-supplier routing rules and alternate return locations, using the retailer-provides-label configuration Shopify recommends for third-party returns apps.
The retailer refunds the customer. The supplier reimburses the retailer separately according to the Collective agreement. With ReturnZap, you issue the customer refund from the return page or automate it.
They can return everything from one order, one destination at a time. Each return generates one label for one address, so a mixed return may require two short submissions in the portal.
The experience stays under your brand: your portal, your emails, your policies. The only difference the customer sees is the destination address on the label.
Yes. ReturnZap rules can scope return windows, fees, and available resolutions to a specific vendor, so each supplier's terms apply only to their products.
Set return processing to "Retailer provides return label, and customer returns items to supplier," and set supplier refunds to "Collective takes no action." This is Shopify's documented recommendation for third-party returns apps.
If you sell through Shopify Collective, ReturnZap can manage supplier returns using features already built into the platform. Set up your supplier locations and routing rules yourself, or book a call and we'll configure them with you.
